The 1971 debut album from Roy Porter Sound Machine, Jessica, has long been celebrated as one of the greatest examples of heavy jazz/funk fusion. Less celebrated, but no less potent in its own way, is the band’s 1975 sequel, Inner Feelings. Here reissued on vinyl for the first time in a while courtesy of Mo-Jazz, the set contains a string of Blaxploitation-era numbers rich in warm and undulating bass, jazzy horn arrangement, flanged guitars and ear-catching electric piano licks. As you’d expect, Porter’s drum-rhythms are excellent throughout, while his Curtis Mayfield-esque vocals do the business on a handful of tracks. If you love the funkier end of the jazz-funk spectrum, you need Inner Feelings in your life.
