Rediscover the Pioneering Jazz-Fusion Gem: Turning Point’s “Creatures Of The Night”

Analogue October Records is delighted to present a definitive vinyl reissue of Turning Point’s trail‑blazing 1977 debut, Creatures Of The Night. Capturing the energy of the British jazz‑fusion scene, this album weaves jazz, rock and Canterbury‑style experimentation into a sound that is both melodic and exploratory. The reissue has been mastered and cut by Caspar Sutton‑Jones at Gearbox Records directly from the original ¼‑inch stereo master tapes, preserving the album’s warm, analogue character for a new generation of listeners.

Turning Point: A Short History

Turning Point formed in 1975 when bassist Jeff Clyne and keyboardist Brian Miller, both veterans of Isotope, gathered like‑minded musicians to explore jazz‑rock fusion with hints of the Canterbury sound. They enlisted saxophonist Dave Tidball, drummer Paul Robinson and vocalist Pepi Lemer to create a cooperative ensemble that could seamlessly blend composed passages with improvisation. The band’s goal was to push jazz fusion forward while retaining melodic accessibility, taking inspiration from artists like Magma, Chick Corea and Flora Purim. They toured extensively in the late 1970s, supporting groups such as National Health, and recorded just two albums before disbanding after their final tour in 1980.

Album Concept

The seven original compositions on Creatures Of The Night showcase the band’s unique blend of jazz‑rock and atmospheric improvisation. “My Lady C,” “The Journey,” “Vanishing Dream,” and the title track all unfold in episodes, moving from gentle melodic phrases to intense, electrifying passages. The two longer pieces, “Princess Aura” and “Rain Dance,” highlight the band’s ability to stretch out while maintaining narrative cohesion. “Better Days” closes the album with hypnotic bass lines and wordless vocals that recall early Weather Report. Throughout, Brian Miller’s acoustic and electric pianos and synthesizers create shimmering textures, while Dave Tidball’s tenor and soprano saxophones provide lyrical counterpoint. Pepi Lemer’s wordless vocals float over the arrangements, adding a celestial dimension to the music.

Recording

Creatures Of The Night was recorded at Morgan Studios in London and produced by the band themselves. The sessions captured the group’s live energy while taking advantage of studio techniques to layer keyboards, saxophones and vocals. The engineering by Lyndsay Kidd and re‑mix by Martin Levan deliver a clear yet richly textured soundscape. Art director John Pasche and illustrator Mike Priddle created a striking sleeve that reflects the album’s nocturnal mood.

Release and Reception

Originally issued on the Gull label in 1977, the album quickly became a collector’s item. While it received limited mainstream attention at the time, its seamless fusion of genres earned it a cult following among jazz‑rock and progressive listeners. Its reputation has only grown in the decades since, with enthusiasts regarding it as a keystone of British jazz‑fusion. Paired with the band’s only other studio record, 1978’s Silent Promise, it has enjoyed renewed interest.
