The Tracking Angle

an overall listening experience that is richer, a larger and deeper tapestry, more “you are there”, and where all the many elements are more integrated – more of a whole.  A listening experience that is ultimately more satisfying musically.  I heard so much I’d never heard before, I was able to listen so much deeper into the music.  And with music this dense, so capable of rewarding you again and again on repeated listenings, that is of special value.

This beautifully-packaged and great-sounding edition on new label Analogue October […] was mastered at Gearbox Records and is issued on vinyl for the first time since the 1980s.

We do enjoy a good jazz reissue here at Just Played and Chichester-based indie store Analogue October has decided to start releasing records as well as selling them. … The soundstage is enormous and there’s discernible space within the performances: Gary Crosby’s fingers on the strings of his bass are palpable and Pine’s saxophone is a rich, fluid presence in the centre. … This is quite the way to announce yourself on the reissue scene. More, please, Analogue October.

What a beautiful record! I’ve played this four times now and blasted it — you can really kick this up…This puts some audiophile labels to shame… heavy card stock… one bound book… an essay about Neil [Ardley] and this record… This is one of those all-analog audiophile releases… done carefully, beautifully, independently. Analogue October Records did an exquisite job!

Mastered by the inimitable Caspar Sutton-Jones at Gearbox from Decca’s original master tapes, this sounds truly enormous. … With John Martyn and Ian Carr amongst his musical accomplices, Ardley was clearly in alchemical form for this one and the mastering is flawless. … There are only 500 of these near-silent Optimal pressings and I can guarantee they’ll be changing hands for big money before too long.

I highly recommend giving this a listen. I put this on, and it has everything I love about that 70’s sound… I was just sitting back with my eyes closed, relaxed.. and I was startled because all of a sudden with the Pass Labs INT60, this three dimensional sound just came towards me in a way I’d never heard it before. Infact, after a couple of minutes of listening to it, I just got up and started it all over again, because I just wanted to hear it. The three dimensional sound, the soundstage was HUGE.

Our Creative Partners

Through R&D to final distribution, our reissues rely heavily on solid relationships with our very carefully chosen partners

The DS Audio cartridge is a marvel of modern analogue playback, replacing traditional coils and magnets with an optical system that reads groove modulation using light. This design nearly eliminates moving mass, giving it astonishing transient response, lifelike dynamics, and whisper-quiet backgrounds. With no magnetic field to blur detail, music emerges with extraordinary clarity and tonal purity, making the DS Audio not just a cartridge, but a revelation in how records can sound.

The EMM Labs DS-EQ1 is a reference optical phono stage created to match DS Audio cartridges, translating their light-based signal with uncompromising precision. Using Ed Meitner’s renowned circuitry, it delivers vanishing noise, immense dynamic range, and holographic soundstage depth. By preserving the purity of the optical signal, the DS-EQ1 reveals recordings with effortless transparency and musicality, making it not just an equalizer, but the essential partner that transforms DS Audio innovation into breathtaking analogue performance.

Origin Live turntables are crafted with a singular focus on extracting the most natural and dynamic sound from vinyl, combining precision engineering with musical insight. Their designs minimize resonance and preserve timing, allowing music to flow with effortless rhythm, tonal richness, and a sense of realism that feels startlingly alive. Far from being just playback machines, Origin Live decks are instruments in their own right—refined platforms that let records reveal their true emotional depth.

The Gearbox Records mastering suite, led by Caspar Sutton-Jones, is dedicated to preserving the integrity and vitality of music from studio to vinyl. With an all-analogue signal path and a philosophy rooted in fidelity and transparency, it captures every nuance while ensuring recordings retain their warmth and dynamic impact. Caspar’s expertise brings precision and artistry together, making the suite not just a technical facility, but a creative space where music is given its final, definitive form.

Miles Showell’s half-speed mastering suite at Abbey Road is a world-class facility dedicated to extracting maximum detail and fidelity from source recordings. By cutting lacquers at half the usual speed, the process allows greater accuracy in groove formation, reducing distortion and revealing layers of clarity, depth, and tonal precision. Combined with Showell’s expertise, it transforms mastering into an art form, making the suite not just a technical marvel, but a gateway to vinyl of unrivalled refinement.

The Fozgometer 2 from Musical Surroundings is a precision tool designed to simplify and perfect azimuth alignment in phono cartridges. By accurately measuring channel balance, separation, and phase, it ensures optimal stylus orientation for the clearest, most coherent sound. Compact and user-friendly, it transforms a complex adjustment into a straightforward process, making it not just a tool, but an essential companion for unlocking the full potential of any vinyl system.

Established in 1963, Selsey Press is our local printers.

The question we posed to them was simple… could they match the quality of some of our favourite labels and their sleeves? The results speak for themself. We work very closely with Selsey Press and their Graphic Designer Tim Rogers (hype, inserts, labels and sleeve), to ensure that regardless of the source material available, we are able to present the best records in the best sleeves!

SRD has long been a cornerstone of music distribution in the UK, offering independent labels and artists a reliable path to market with professionalism and care. Their reach extends far beyond national borders through international partners such as Forced Exposure, ensuring records find their way into the hands of listeners worldwide.
